Between August 19 and 23, Salvador, the capital of Bahia, will host the Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week (LACCW). The purpose of this significant event will be to make evident the climate actions that are being implemented in Latin America. The program will include over 1,000 people from various regions. Unlike the climate negotiations that take place annually at the COP (Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), at Climate Week the theme is action.
Companies, states, municipalities, and civil society organizations can discuss the opportunities and challenges of how to deal with the climate crisis situation in which we are in, how to work to increase the collective ambition in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and in the adaptation to the impacts of climate change that are already being felt on many levels. In-depth discussions will be proposed on four of the nine topics of the Climate Action Summit, which will be presided over by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, in September:
1) energy transition;
2) industry transition;
3) infrastructure, cities and local government;
4) nature-based solutions.
The agenda is already available online and registration is free. In addition to these issues and debates promoted by the organizers, there are several other ways to participate: attend the debates, exhibit works at the stands, and organize themed discussions. Proponents have until mid-July to present suggestions for activities, which will be selected by the Secretariat of the UN Convention on Climate Change. See more details here !
Considering the importance of advances in the implementation of practical measures and public policies – which, at the same time, respond to our challenges of development and promote the decarbonization of the Brazilian economy -, iCS and many of its partners will be present, contributing to several discussions. This is a great opportunity to learn about other Latin American experiences in this global fight to combat climate change. In the next newsletter, we will reveal the activities that will be promoted by iCS and its partners during Climate Week. Join us!
