The Arayara Institute, in partnership with the political parties PSOL, Rede and PSB, entered a href=”https://climainfo.org.br/2022/03/14/partidos-entram-com-acao-no-stf-contra-extensao-do-subsidio-a-queima-de-carvao/”> Direct Action of Unconstitutionality on March 10, at the Federal Supreme Court (STF) challenging Law 14,229, which extends the subsidies for coal to generate electric energy in Santa Catarina until 2040. This decision benefits the Jorge Lacerda Thermoelectric Complex. The action, supported by the Climate Observatory, IEMA and IDEC, has Arayara as an “amicus curiae” [friend of the court] (an institution that provides information and supporting documentation to court decisions) of the parties and shows that the legislation distorts the concept of “Fair Energy Transition” because it explicitly determines the continued emission of a large volume of greenhouse gases.
