IPAM (Environmental Research Institute of the Amazon) released Technical Paper Number 3 in April, with a worrying note: “Amazon in flames: Fire and deforestation in 2019 and what’s coming in 2020.” The summary is enlightening: although command and control actions restrained the worst fire scenario in 2019 (but not the clearing of forests), the fire season had a clear relationship with the increase in deforestation and not with a drier climate. Meanwhile, the increase in deforestation in 2020, added to the vegetation felled in 2019 that did not burn, has created the expectation of a new season of intense fires. The land grabbing on undesignated and undisclosed public lands has actually increased and the federal government and the states must act quickly to avoid the worst. More information here .
