The ten municipalities that emitted most greenhouse gases (GHG) in Brazil totaled 172 million gross tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), more than some entire countries, such as Peru, Belgium and the Philippines. And where are seven of these highest emitters? The Amazon. The data is from the first edition of SEEG Municipalities, which is an innovative initiative by the Climate Observatory that covers every year from 2000 to 2018 in the 5,570 Brazilian municipalities.

The highest emitter is São Félix do Xingu (PA), which has suffered with deforestation. Of the 29.7 million gross tons of CO2e launched into the atmosphere in 2019, 25.44 million originated from this practice (deforestation), followed by agriculture and cattle breeding, with 4.22 million. If it were a country, São Félix would be ahead of countries such as Uruguay, Norway, Chile, Croatia, Costa Rica and Panama in terms of the volume of emissions, according to Cait, a global ranking by the World Resources Institute.
