Investigative report exposed the connections between international supermarkets, Brazilian meat packing companies and cattle ranchers responsible for the deforestation in the Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal

The journalist Marcel Gomes, from the organization Repórter Brasil, has won the Goldman Environmental Prize 2024, considered the “Nobel Prize of environmentalism,” for his dedication to investigative journalism in favor of the environment. The ceremony was held on April 29 in San Francisco, California (United States).

Marcel was recognized after leading an investigation that exposed the connections between European and North American supermarket chains with Brazilian meat packing companies supplied by cattle ranchers charged with illegal deforestation in various biomes, such as the Amazon, the Cerrado and the Pantanal. The initiative was supported by iCS and the international organization Mighty Earth.

Due to the great international repercussion of the report, six large retail groups from Belgium, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, with a combined annual turnover of more than US$ 30 billion, suspended the sale of products from the companies involved with the cattle ranchers charged in December 2021.

“Having more transparency in the purchase and sale of products, in the commodity supply chains, is a way of putting pressure so that everyone – companies, governments and consumers – are more attentive to production practices that are not sustainable,” said the executive secretary at Repórter Brasil in an article on the organization’s website.

Granted by the Goldman Foundation, this is the fifth time that a Brazilian has been honored with the award, which has already been presented to minister Marina Silva and the indigenous leader Alessandra Munduruku. Annually, six environmental defenders from different regions of the world are honored: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands and Island Nations, in addition to the Americas (North, South and Central).
