An important victory needs to be celebrated. Judge Clarides Rahmeier, from the 9th Federal Court of Porto Alegre, suspended the environmental licensing process of the Nova Seival Thermoelectric Power Plant and also annulled the public hearing, on May 20, this year. This is a response to the Public Civil Action filed by civil society entities against Ibama and Copelmi Mineração. According to the decision by Rahmeier, there is no analysis on the merits by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) regarding the EIA/RIMA and the potential restriction of access for the rural population.
The judge also agreed with the request for the inclusion of the precepts that apply to climate change under the terms of reference of the licensing processes for thermoelectric power plants. Read more about this case here , here and here .
