With the support of iCS, the event by ABRAMPA brought together prosecutors, environmentalists, scientists and representatives from civil society who work in the defense of the environment and the climate throughout the country

Members from the Prosecution Office (MP) in the country met at the 22nd edition of the Brazilian Congress of the Prosecution Office about the Environment to debate “The Amazon and Climate Change: a strategic and integrated socioenvironmental action” in Belém, Pará. The objective of the meeting was to reinforce the role of the prosecutors, environmentalists, scientists and representatives from civil society in the climate agenda, in addition to developing new strategies to combat the deforestation in the Amazon.

During the April 24-26, topics involving the environmental agenda were discussed, including socioenvironmental strategies for the Amazon and climate change, deforestation and land grabbing, environmental responsibility in the production chain, combating environmental crime, access to environmental justice, reverse waste logistics, the new sanitation framework, and good practices for conservation and extractivism units.

One of the highlights of the program was the participation of the journalist and writer Miriam Leitão, who discussed the interconnection and interdependence between climate issues and the economic scenario, offering a panoramic view of deforestation throughout the various governments since the re-democratization.

Also highlighted were representatives from the traditional communities of the Amazon region, such as Vanuza Cardoso, the leader of the Abacatal quilombola community, located in Ananindeua, a metropolitan region of Belém, and chief Dadá Borari, from Aldeia Novo Lugar, in the Maró Indigenous Land, in the municipality of Santarém. Both warned about the advance of deforestation by large companies in their territories, and emphasized the negative impact on traditional communities and the global environment. iCS was one of the supporters of the event.
