COP26, the global climate conference that was to be held in Glasgow (Scotland) in November, had its postponement confirmed by the government on April 1, due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus. “In view of the global and continuous impact of covid-19, the celebration of an ambitious and inclusive COP26 in November 2020 is not possible,” says the official communication, emphasizing that the meeting will take place in the same city in 2021, with no date yet stipulated. The positioning of the Climate Observatory, an iCS grantee, has our endorsement:

“The postponement of COP26 was an expected step in the face of the global tragedy of COVID-19, which has no end date. The epidemiological emergency, however, does not discharge countries from increasing their ambition and taking actions against another major crisis facing humanity, the climate crisis. When the pandemic passes, we will have a world definitively transformed and a global economy to rebuild, and it is indispensable that this reconstruction occurs on a sustainable basis. We must learn from one crisis, in order to avoid others. The conference can be a decisive step in this reconstruction,” said Marcio Astrini, the Executive Secretary.

Organizations interested in the role of observers of the international negotiations, with a status that grants them access to many of the negotiation rooms and events of the countries during the COPs, have until August 31, 2020, to send their registrations .
