On June 27, Brasília hosted the International Meeting on Long-Term Development Strategies and Climate Change. During such event, German and Mexican experts shared their experiences in drawing up long-term low carbon strategic plans (LTS) in a debate that kicked off discussions with civil society and other stakeholders about the drafting of the Brazilian plan. The debate was an initiative of the iCS – Instituto Clima e Sociedade, in partnership with the German Embassy and FBMC, and was broadcast via streaming through the iCS youtube channel, which can be accessed here .

The iCS event discussed how Brazil can develop a long-term plan and how it should engage other audiences with great potential to lead the changes that are necessary for a transition into a low-carbon economy, such as companies, cities and states. Platform 2050, which was presented for the first time in Brazil during the event, fits this vision. Launched during the CoP22, in Marrakesh, Platform 2050 will support countries, cities and companies seeking to develop long-term decarbonization strategies for the economy, including resource-sharing initiatives (and capacity building), as well as expertise and experience.

According to Ana Toni, the Executive Director of the iCS, “The challenge for the country is to realize that climate change can be a lever for development. It’s a political-social issue that requires looking at a new decarbonized world economy.”
