September was mobility month, and several iCS grantees seized the opportunity to discuss and mobilize the population about the importance of walkability and human-powered transportation.
On September 22, the Car-Free Day, Cidade Ativa announced the Warning by Cidade Ativa campaign (a reference to the campaign against smoking), which highlights the health problems caused by automobiles. The campaign involved a series of creative stickers covering four themes: pollution, sedentary lifestyle, stress and collision injuries.
On the same date, SPTV , the Globo network news program, followed a pedestrian through the streets and sidewalks of São Paulo, showing the importance of a city designed for walkability, and the current challenges faced by the population of the largest metropolis in Brazil. Renato Mello, from Corrida Amiga , followed along the same route.
Two days before, the Nossa São Paulo network and Cidade dos Sonhos launched the 11th edition of the Urban Mobility Survey , which shows the population’s perception regarding traffic and public transportation in the city of São Paulo. Among the highlights, were the worsening of the level of satisfaction regarding all aspects relating to transportation services, which goes against the improvement trend that had been recorded since 2008; the fact that 58% of the interviewees who using cycle lanes or paths felt unsafe; and the certainty reported by 42% of the São Paulo inhabitants that there has been a decrease in the level of observance of the rules applicable to pedestrians tracks.
IDEC (Brazilian Institute of Consumer Protection) , in turn, launched an animation film explaining the concepts of urban mobility, with the following message: “Everyone is entitled to a quality transportation system, in order to have access to health, education, leisure, work and more.”
At the end a month full of actions seeking improvements in mobility, Ciclocidade invited the public to spend a Saturday dedicated to conversation rounds and social gatherings, on September 30. Among the proposed themes were gender violence and the current scenario of cycle mobility in São Paulo.
