The information is frightening: 17.5% of Brazil (or 1.5 million square kilometers) has already been burned at least once in 20 years, and most of the fire has affected native vegetation. This is one of the main items of information from MapBiomas Fogo, which is an initiative that was launched on December 3. It consolidates information about the area burned each year in the country, from 2000 to 2019. It provides the location, frequency and the type of coverage and associated land use. Over 300,000 km² of the forests existing in the country today have been burned in the last two decades, of which 195,000 km² have burned twice or more. The content is part of the 5th annual collection of maps of coverage and land use maps of Brazil by MapBiomas. Watch the video below:
