For the third consecutive year, the federal government has sent the Armed Forces to the Amazon, in an attempt to control the deforestation in the region. IPAM made a statement in which it expresses that decree 10730/2021, which establishes the new GLO (Guarantee of Law and Order), and decree 10735/2021, which establishes a moratorium on fires for 120 days, are welcome. However, it reinforces that this same strategy did not work in 2019 or 2020, when more than 10,000 square kilometers, of mostly federal land, were destroyed each year. Even worse, it appears that 2021 will be the same.

IPAM explains that the moratorium and the current GLO focus on 26 municipalities, which is a clear mistake, because the criminals are being practically “warned” that they must leave one location and look for another one, which is not part of the decree. Furthermore, the GLO ends in August, and everyone knows that the deforestation and fires will follow in September and October, and may even continue until November – especially this year, when the influence of La Niña will make the southern Amazon drier. Finally, the criminality is being encouraged with the intermittence of the actions in the region, with the gaps between each GLO.
