We are pleased to announce the new portfolio of Land Use and Food Systems at the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS). Although we have already made some donations for this area, especially in 2019, we are formalizing the new program area, which is being coordinated by Gabriel Lui.
Gabriel has a degree in Environmental Management from ESALQ/USP, and a master’s degree and a doctorate in Applied Ecology at USP. He has held management positions in the areas of forestry, sustainable rural development, and combating deforestation, at the Ministry of the Environment and at the Chico Mendes Institute for Conservation of the Biodiversity. He has been involved in the development and implementation of some of the main policies related to the land use of the country, such as the New Forest Code, the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR), and the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of Brazil.
He is an associate researcher at the Center for the Analysis of Social-Ecological Landscapes (CASEL), at Indiana University, in the USA. He was one of the authors of the IPBES Global Assessment, launched in 2019. At iCS, he will coordinate the new portfolio of Land Use and Food Systems, with the objective of promoting actions and incentives for more sustainable land use, for the improvement of forest management, and for the reduction of the environmental impacts of agriculture and food.
Welcome, Gabriel!
