Five minutes for transport

Casa Fluminense launched on April 3, the second edition of the Agenda Rio Newsletter, about urban mobility, in front of the Central do Brasil – the main metropolitan railway station of Rio de Janeiro. At the time, the intervention “5 minutes to discover that good and cheap transport is possible” was held, which used a visual interaction device with the public to address the issue of the quality of public transport, the need for new forms of financing for the system, the lack of transparency, and the bidding process for the Bilhete Único [Single Ticket]. In all, 10,000 copies were distributed of the newsletter, which deals with proposal 3.1 of urban mobility from the Agenda Rio 2030 .

“We were at the Central railway station throughout the day to talk to people about the possibility of a good, quality public transport. We installed an intervention with details about how to lower the price of a ticket. We showed the example of other cities that have adopted other forms of financing that go beyond the ticket price paid for by the users, the need to review the profit margin of the transport companies, and the urgency for transparency in the electronic ticketing so that there is public and social control. We also distributed 3,500 copies of the Agenda Rio Newsletter, which is a publication in a popular newspaper format that communicates more extensively the entire message of this action. It is important to highlight that the bidding process for the Bilhete Único [Single Ticket] was a campaign promise of the governor Wilson Witzel. The measure requires no investment but only political will. The current reality of the transport system leaves people without conditions to travel to work and only deepens the territorial inequalities, mainly for residents living in the peripheries of the metropolitan region,” said Vitor Mihessen, the information coordinator for the Casa Fluminense.
Bus technology for São Paulo

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) has made available online the technical report “Climate and air pollutant emissions benefits of bus technology options in São Paulo.” The document derives from Municipal Law 16802, dated January 2018, which defines reduction targets for the exhaust emissions of fossil CO2 and the air pollutants particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in all the São Paulo bus fleet, in terms of 10 and 20 years. The ICCT evaluates a series of bus engine technologies and alternative fuels that could contribute to the objective of the law, including Euro VI technology, biofuels and electric drive buses. The modeling indicates that extensive and short-term transitions are required in order to achieve the targets, such as, for example, the fact that all new buses purchased from 2019 have the Euro VI standard or better performance in terms of emissions. More Air, Less Smoke

Every year, 350 people lose their lives in Campinas (SP) due to air pollution – and one of the main villains is the smoke from engines. Based on the proximity of Campinas carrying out a new bidding process for the recruitment of companies that will operate the 1,200 buses that circulate in the city, Purpose created the campaign “More Air, Less Smoke” . Through it, it is possible, among other things, to send an email to the mayor demanding clean energy for the entire fleet of the city and to participate in the Hackathon Campinas dos Sonhos [Campinas of Dreams], which will be a marathon for the creation of creative solutions aimed at specialists, engineers, project managers and everyone from Campinas who is willing to dedicate time and energy to consider and to develop a more sustainable and innovative municipality.

Climate and Active Mobility

The Coalition for Climate and Active Mobility (CCMob) has created a channel on YouTube. The objective of the channel, which has active mobility and climate change as the central themes in its videos, is to guarantee that the means of active transport are incorporated into the Brazilian climate agenda.
