It is with deep sadness and dismay that we report the death of the environmentalist, journalist, ex-parliamentarian and writer Alfredo Hélio Sirkis, 69, on the afternoon of July 10, in a car accident on the Arco Metropolitano (BR-493), in Baixada Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro. Sirkis, as he was known in the climate community, was one of the precursors of the environmentalist movement in Brazil and will be missed in our hearts. Only two weeks ago, we celebrated the launch of his book “Descarbonário”, about the stories, background information and incidents of the universe of climate change.
“Sirkis was fundamental to the environmental and climate agenda of Brazil. His life was guided by attracting improbable and even skeptical people to this important fight. A climate warrior!” said Ana Toni, executive director of the Institute for Climate and Society.
In recent years, iCS has supported dozens of initiatives coordinated by Sirkis – among them, the Brazilian Forum for Climate Change (FBMC), Climate Reality and the Brazil Center for Climate (CBC). We offer our deepest sympathy, wishes of affection and consolation to the whole family, as well as our network that worked alongside this great friend and partner.
Sirkis, rest in peace! We are all very grateful for all your irreplaceable contribution to our field and to the environment! Rio de Janeiro has lost one of its best cariocas.
