International maritime transport plays an essential role in trade and in the world economy. In order to meet decarbonization targets of the maritime transport sector, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), it is fundamental to research and enable alternatives of low emission fuels for shipping. To discuss the “Perspectives for the Production of Maritime Fuels with Neutral Carbon Emission in Brazil,” the Institute for Climate and Society has invited Professor Alexandre Szklo, from the Energy Planning program at COPPE/UFRJ, to present the first results from the study conducted by his team on this subject. “The International Maritime Organization (IMO) approved decarbonization targets for the maritime sector in 2018, to be achieved through short, medium- and long-term deadlines. The medium- and long-term deadlines involve, among other initiatives, the development of less emitting fuels for maritime transport. In this context, Brazil is a potential pole producer of these new maritime fuels, mainly due to the availability of natural resources and its experience in the development and production of bi-fuels.
The Webinar will present the preliminary results of the study Perspectives for the Production of Maritime Fuels with Neutral Carbon Emissions in Brazil, a study supported by the Institute for Climate and Society, which is being conducted by Cenergia, a research group from the Energy Planning Program at COPPE/UFRJ. The objective of the study is to evaluate the comparative advantages of Brazil for the sustainable production of different types of shipping fuels with zero emissions, from the analysis of technical and economic factors, and also considering aspects of safety and sustainability” – Lavinia Hollanda, iCS consultant for the subject of maritime transport.
