A discussion of the benefits of the adoption of more rigorous minimum levels of energy efficiency for air conditioners (highlighting the savings of economy and for the consumer, the reduction of peak loads, the gains for the manufacturers, and the reduction of emissions). On May 14, the webinar “Usage of air conditioners in Brazil: perspectives and contributions to the advancement of energy efficiency” took place. This was a joint initiative of the Energy Research Company (EPE), iCS, and the International Energy Agency (IEA). The webinar discussed the benefits of the adoption of more rigorous minimum levels of energy efficiency for air conditioners, highlighting the saving of energy, the reduction of peak loads, the saving for the consumer, and the gains for manufacturers, as well as, of course, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The webinar had an excellent response, with over 50 participants, from various government sectors, associations from the air conditioning industry, distribution companies from the sector, civil society, and academia. In partnership with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the International Energy Initiative, we published the report “Regulatory Impact Study: general guidelines and a case study for air conditioners of the split system type in Brazil.” It is a guide that provides details all the methodological stages adopted for the development of the regulatory impact study performed to evaluate the adoption of more rigorous standards of energy efficiency. On May 30, INMETRO held the first technical meeting to discuss the adoption of a seasonal metric for tests of air conditioners. Won Park, from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, presented analyses and recommendations on this subject. At the end, the new coordinator of the Brazilian Program of Labeling (PBE) submitted a draft proposal of the regulations to govern the test methods of air conditioners.
