Professionals participated in legal mentoring about carbon projects organized by Laclima, in partnership with Maparajuba and CPT, in Santarém (PA)

Popular lawyers, teachers, students and representatives from civil society organizations gathered together to debate popular advocacy, human rights and the challenges of climate change in Santarém, Pará, between April 18 and 20.

With the support of the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS), the meeting was promoted by the Maparajuba Human Rights Collective and the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT) of Itaituba. It debated the carbon market and the increase of harassment by large companies against traditional peoples and communities.

This issue became fundamental after reports of violations of rights emerged in communities from the Tapajós region, which have been pressured to reach an agreement involving carbon credit projects.

Based on the legal mentoring promoted by Laclima, in partnership with Maparajuba, the participants had the opportunity to understand how they can work with the communities to prevent the signing of malicious contracts.

The legal mentoring, above all, concentrated on the contractual aspects of the carbon projects with the communities, highlighting all the precautions that the lawyer or the community need to take before signing the contract (such as land issues, restrictions on the use of territory by the communities, conflict resolution, rescission clauses and prior consultation, etc.), in addition to presenting general concepts about the carbon markets.
