Discover the finalist proposals for the call for projects on Community-Based Adaptation
A total of 618 initiatives were received—a record for iCS calls for proposals—demonstrating that climate adaptation is already a reality across many Brazilian territories
Responses to climate challenges are already being developed within local territories. Indigenous, quilombola, rural, urban, and coastal communities are crafting solutions rooted in their own realities to reduce vulnerabilities and strengthen resilience. The call for proposals titled “Territory- and Community-Based Climate Adaptation Solutions” aims to bring visibility to these initiatives; in this current phase, 17 proposals have been selected to advance in the selection process.
Projects from the states of Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba, and Pernambuco—the states eligible to participate—were selected for the second stage. Among the 17 finalists, 5 are from rural communities, 4 are quilombola communities, 3 are from peripheral urban areas, and 5 are Indigenous communities.
“Even with a geographic focus—identifying states with particular vulnerability to climate change—we received 618 proposals, a significantly higher number than in our previous calls for projects. The high volume and quality of local solutions for addressing climate challenges motivate us to seek other ways to meet this demand. The 17 proposals selected in the first stage reflect the creativity, resilience, and capacity of communities to put forward concrete paths for adaptation. We are confident that this journey will yield highly relevant contributions to the climate agenda,” said Luiza de Mello e Souza, Director of Grants, Evaluation, and Knowledge at the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS).

Regarding the climate impact being faced by the organizations moving on to the second stage, the details are as follows:
- 1 project addresses forest fires;
- 3 initiatives concern floods, inundations, and flash floods;
- 1 project focuses on adapting to heatwaves;
- 12 proposals relate to prolonged droughts.
“Climate adaptation truly takes place when knowledge about risks is transformed into concrete solutions within local territories. The proposals received were of excellent quality, and those selected for the second stage demonstrate various paths toward this goal—with measures focused on water security, the resilience of production systems, ecosystem restoration, the protection of vulnerable areas, and the preparation of communities for extreme events. This call for proposals seeks to recognize and strengthen these initiatives, while valuing the leading role of communities in developing climate responses,” said Bruna Guimarães, a Climate Adaptation specialist at iCS.
As next steps, the selected organizations should:
– Submit complete proposals by October 4, 2026, including further details on deliverables, outcomes, indicators, risks, and other aspects.
– Each organization will receive access credentials for the management system via email.
The final selections will be announced on November 10, 2026. Questions should be directed to the email address edital@climaesociedade.org
