The iCS-ANPEC Award encourages research in economics and climate
The initiative seeks to expand studies that analyze the challenges and opportunities of climate transition in Brazil
With the goal of strengthening the production of scientific knowledge at the interface between economics and climate, the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS), through its Economics & Climate Hub, is launching the iCS-ANPEC Economics & Climate Award – 2026 Edition. The initiative seeks to recognize studies that contribute to understanding the economic impacts of climate change and support the development of more efficient strategies for mitigation, adaptation, and sustainable development in Brazil.
In this edition, the award is held in partnership with the National Association of Graduate Centers in Economics (ANPEC), a leading institution in promoting academic excellence and strengthening research in Economics in the country. This collaboration broadens the initiative’s connection with the scientific community and seeks to stimulate the production of work with potential applications in public policies, economic strategies, and investment decisions related to the climate agenda.
“Advancing the interface between economics and climate is essential to respond to the challenges of the transition in Brazil. This award reinforces the iCS strategy, through the Economics and Climate Hub, of recognizing the production of applied knowledge capable of guiding public policies, investment decisions, and development strategies that reconcile competitiveness and sustainability,” highlights Sarah Irffi, specialist in Climate Economics, Climate Policy, and Institutional Framework at iCS.
The award seeks to recognize studies that offer evidence capable of supporting decision-makers and driving a just, efficient, and scientifically based climate transition.

It also includes analyses of the effects of these impacts on sectors such as insurance, federal and subnational public accounts, investments, and monetary and fiscal policies.
- Economic and social costs of inaction
This research line encompasses studies on the economic costs of past environmental disasters and shocks, considering their impacts on GDP, productivity, physical capital, and human capital.
The line also includes projections of risks and economic costs for the coming years, considering the most likely climate scenarios.
- Fiscal policy and economic incentives related to climate
