Innovation for a sustainable ocean

The initiative seeks to boost technologies and research focused on maritime decarbonization, the blue economy, and ocean protection.

The Ocean and Energy Transition Special Award—an initiative aimed at recognizing and fostering research, technologies, and solutions developed at Coppe that support a sustainable future for the oceans and global shipping—closed its call for entries on September 4. Participating projects relate to at least one of the following themes:

Addressing climate change: adaptation and mitigation in the context of maritime transport and the coastal economy.

Blue economy: sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and improved livelihoods;

Maritime decarbonization: alternative fuels, clean propulsion, and energy efficiency in vessels and port infrastructure;

Energy transition: technologies, models, and solutions for replacing fossil-based sources in the transport sector;

Ocean sustainability: protection of marine ecosystems, environmental monitoring, and responsible use of water resources.

Organized by Coppe and Marsalgado—iCS grantees—the awards recognize work by undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students. Winners will each receive R$2,500, a certificate, and six hours of mentoring with industry executives. Pitch Day, where the selected participants will be announced, takes place on September 22.

iCS works to ensure the ocean-climate nexus agenda generates opportunities and solid investments that enable mitigation, adaptation, and coastal resilience.
